Symbiosis with the City

The Manhattan site is adjacent to the East River shoreline and the East River Park and the program is an energy-from-waste plant, with a free-diving training facility.

The project intends to shield pedestrians from heavy traffic on the FDR and trucks serving the site’s functions while preserving the porosity of the site to encourage pedestrians to explore the shoreline and adjacent park. The aesthetic ambition of the project was inspired by the symbiosis between an energy-from-waste plant and the city itself, while the formal ambition and arrangement of the project on the site were inspired by its location, sitting astride the boundary of Manhattan and the East River.
